I started my radio internship with AM 580 WDBO the monday right after my birthday, May 16th, with no idea whatsoever what to really expect from this new experience. All I brought on my first day was my classic Louis V. bag and a red, 70 sheet paged notebook. Of course I had my casual business attire on point; I wouldn’t dare walk in on my first day looking “unkept”. As soon as I walked in and was introduced to the staff , the news director, Marsha Taylor, put me right to work. I made phone calls, sent out emails, and wrote down notes. With a huge empty pit in my stomach, and the feeling of guilt rushing through my mind with knowing that I had no clue what I was doing, made me feel extremely uneasy. But, you know what they say, “fake it til you know it, or fake it til you make it”. Either way I was doing both.
After a couple of weeks of being at the news station I started to grow into my own place by writing online stories and on air clips. The highlights of my week are going out with Joe, a reporter with WDBO, and meeting all of the new and exciting people and seeing all the locations where news has taken place. So far the biggest “orlando celebrities” I have met are, Senator Bill Nelson and Mayor Buddy Dyer! Unfortunately, I have came to realize that my true passion is not radio, but television. I stare in awe and admire the local TV news reporters that I come across in the field. I know in my heart that I am destined to be an entertainment host and/or a news reporter! It is only a matter of time before I make a mark on this world, and I can not wait for my future success!
A not so proud native of Atlantic City, NJ, Tony Timberlake spoke about his reserved childhood and the culture shock he had faced when he and his family moved to Newtonville, NJ. From kindergarten to third grade he attended Mainland Christian School and finished elementary at Our Lady Star of the Sea for fourth and fifth grade. He then left private school and went to public where he experienced more of a vivid demographic of cultures.
In the next chapter of Timberlake’s life he chose to go to a four year, private college named, Hampton University. Longing to follow in his cousins footsteps he joined the Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications and is majoring in broadcast journalism. He hopes to have a career with ESPN sports network doing radio or reporting news and then giving his own opinion. ESPN is his dream job as of now but hopes to make it a reality very soon.
Tony stressed that his relationship with his cousins and other family members is tight knitted. In the year 2002, Timberlake’s aunt and one of his cousins influenced him to listen to Christian hip hop and contemporary Christian music. Since that day he hasn’t chosen any other genre over Christian music. He expressed his love for the uplifting music and said, “this type of rap is encouraging and I listen to it every day to get me hype.” His good friend Devon Williams claims, “the Christian rap Tony listens to definitely influences his character. Personally I think it’s admirable for him to listen to it exclusively since it’s not the most popular genre out, and knowing that doesn’t cause him to change who he is. He is true to God and himself.” Niko Richardson, another friend at Hampton University states, “Tony is a good Christian man who loves to listen to Christian rap. He and Christian hip hop have become synonymous in my eyes.” Timberlake continues to influence his friends by listening to this kind of empowering music. Tony stays true to this type of music because it helps him learn more about God. “Just because someone tells me about you doesn’t make me closer to you.” “So, if you tell me about God that doesn’t necessarily make me closer to Him,” said by Timberlake. His meaning behind this quote is that he must have his own interpretation of God and the messages that others give him. No one can or will influence him to believe things he does not want to believe. He must learn about his creator on his own.
Tony Timberlake is an individual who is always striving for the better. Listening to encouraging music and setting himself up for success are his two main focuses in his life right now. Christina rap and contemporary Christian music will forever be a part of his life and his number one music choice. He will continue to influence others lives around him with the messages he hears through his music and plans to stay as a extraordinary individual.
